It looks so graceful, beautiful and it makes us admire the creator even more. And India seems to be one of the favorite canvases of the creator. We have been blessed with so many beautiful waterfalls. Below are the 10 most famous waterfalls which are tourist attractions every year.
JOG WATERFALL – SIDDAPUR, KARNATAKA

Sharavati River flows down all the way from Ambutirtha to give us the beautiful Jog fall. ‘Jog’ in Kannada means falls itself. This waterfall is actually combination of 4 waterfalls- Raja, Roarer, Rocket and Rani, which are named so due to their characteristics. The fall is kept alive in summer by the water from- Linganmakki Dam. And, since there is usually not much water in it, the fall is just a pair of thin streams in summer. But it is in full glory in monsoon.
ATHIRAPPILLY WATERFALL – CHALAKUDY, KERALA

This piece of heaven is surrounded by the only forest that hosts all four species of Kerala’s state bird the great hornbill. This being the largest waterfall in India is also called as ‘The Niagara of India’. Chalakudy River originating from Anamudi in Western Ghats drops down 80 feet to create this waterfall. Billions visit this fall in the monsoon. This fall has been a part of many Indian films like Bahubali, Janata Garage, Yaariyan, Kuch Naa Kaho, Raavan, Dil Se and more.
DUDHSAGAR WATERFALL – GOA

This four-tiered waterfall is exactly what its name means – sea of milk. It is located in Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary and Mollem National Park. You can witness its beauty if you take a train on the Madgaon – Belgavi rail route. Dudhsagar fall, located on Mondovi River also forms a border between Goa and Karnataka State. Dudhsagar trek is one of the most talked and walked in India.
HOGENAKKAL FALLS – DHARMAPURI, KERALA

The name means smoking rocks in kannada and is verbal explanation of how it looks when water falls on rock with force. The river Kaveri in between its journey from its origin Talakaveri in the Brahmagiri hills in the Western Ghats, into the Mettur Stanley Reservoir forms the fall. In summer the fall is fun with the coracle boats. But to see the fall in its full capacity, you must visit it in the monsoon.
DHUANDHAR WATERFALL – BHEDAGHAT, MADHYA PRADESH

Narmada River passing through the famous Marble rocks falls 30 meters down making sound that could be heard from far away. The name Dhuandhar (smoke + flow) is given because the fall creates smoke like mist. The best time to visit is during Sharad Purnima. You will get to enjoy the Narmada Mohotsava Do not forget to take the boat ride in the valley that looks yellow at the sunset. And top up the experience with the cable car ride over the fall.
SHIVANASAMUDRA WATERFALL – MANDYA, KARNATAKA

This is another gem from the River Kaveri. The town of Shivanasamudra, which is the fourth largest river island, cuts the river resulting into two waterfalls. The best time to visit is during monsoon and do not forget to check out the temples nearby. The best location to watch both of these waterfalls is Shivanasamudra watch tower. Make sure you soak in the view because there none other like this.
KUNE FALLS – LONAVALA, MAHARASHTRA

This 14th highest waterfall in India falls 200 meters down in three tiers. Situated near Kune village, it is a scenic view that nourishes the soul. One should also visit the Kune Church which is on the way to the waterfall. Picnics near the fall are major attraction among Lonavala visitors. Do not forget to address the chills with hot chai paired with vadapav. And if you are not a bread fan then go for bhajiyas. Both ways it’s delicious.
AHARBAL WATERFALL – KULGAM, KASHMIR

You haven’t witnessed beauty if you haven’t been to Aharbal falls. This waterfall is the charm of Aharbal hillstation located in the south-western part of the Kashmir Valley. It is surrounded by pine and fir clad mountains. Veshu River flows all the way from Konsernag Lake, to further fall over the granite boulders creating the spectacular view. And if you enjoy fishing then it should definitely be in your list, because the river is filled with trout fish.

You may also know Jogini waterfall as Jugni waterfall. It is one of the most visited tourist attraction near Manali. And that might also be because of how easily accessible it is from Manali along with the breathtaking view it creates. And if you are not a fan of easy, then you can trek to the Jogini falls from Manali via Vashisht Temple route. To add to the thrill of it you may also climb up the fall in mere 20 minutes. Make sure you also take out time to listen to all the mythological stories the place has to offer. And never forget your jacket because it is always chilly up there.
VASUDHARA FALLS – MANA VILLAGE, BADRINATH

Vasudhara falls is almost always visited by the tourists visiting the Badrinath Temple, as it is accessible around the same time the temple is. And the view it offers is one of the prettiest in the country. Vasudhara falls is reachable by a 3 km drive to Mana village and further through a 6 km trek up to the fall. The trek gets stiff as you get closer to the water source. Mana village and its surroundings have known to be associated with the epic tale of Mahabharata. Pandavas are said to be the temporary dwellers of this village along with Sage VedVyasa. This makes the place religious to the locals which are well connected to the Badrinath Temple’s festivities.
